Bichon Frises are rather popular dogs. According to the AKC statistics, the Bichon Frise makes up the first 30 most popular breeds in the USA. Although the number of puppies born in a litter is not great (it averages 3 to 5), Bichon Frise dogs can be easily available.
However, it does not mean that any Bichon can satisfy the customer's needs. It simply may be not what you are looking for. Bichon Frise puppies from backyard breeders seem to be a poor choice. Inexperienced breeders are not aware of the basic techniques used during the process of breeding. Frequently, the main motive for producing a litter is breeding a dam. To determine how experienced the breeder is, try to ask him/her a series of questions. They should concern the breeder's knowledge of the Bichon Frise characteristics, health concerns, potential problems when owning a Bichon, and possible solutions. The breeder should also be able to explain to you the choice of the sire and the puppy's background. It is good if the puppy's ancestors are champions.
Club membership is reliable proof of the breeder's devotion to the Bichon Frise. Clubs often organize shows and promote the breed through public education. Those breeders who are interested in rescue work will hardly ever produce poor quality Bichon Frises.
